Specialized Pediatric Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery in children is a highly complex issue that requires specialized microsurgical tools, child-modified equipment, and surgeons who are deeply familiar with the unique healing responses of young eyes.
At Utsav Eye Clinic, we are proud to be one of the premier referral centers for pediatric cataract surgery in Navi Mumbai, offering advanced care even for newborn infants.
"In children under 8 years of age, removing the cloudy lens is only the first step. The surgeon must also clear the membrane and vitreous gel directly behind the lens implant (posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy) to prevent the visual axis from clouding over in the future."
Why Pediatric Cataract Surgery is Unique
-
👶
General Anesthesia:
Unlike adults, children require general anesthesia. Fasting instructions (no food or water for 4 to 6 hours before) must be carefully followed.
-
👶
Customized Lens Calculations:
Because a child's eye grows aggressively, calculating the IOL power requires complex, specialized software that predicts the eye's growth to select the best lens to serve them into adulthood. We successfully implant IOLs in babies as young as 6 months of age.
-
👶
Alternative Options:
If a child's eye is not suitable for an implant (due to severe inflammation or under-developed structures), we prescribe contact lenses or thick pediatric glasses temporarily, planning secondary IOL implantation when the child is older.
Aftercare & Vision Rehabilitation
Following the procedure, the eye is covered with a patch that is removed the next day. Key recovery guidelines include:
- Instilling specialized steroid and antibiotic eye drops for 4 to 6 weeks.
- Wearing protective goggles as soon as the patch is removed.
- Avoiding swimming and contact sports for 6 to 8 weeks.
- Providing glasses prescription changes and managing patching therapy if lazy eye develops.
